There are so many different attractions in northern Cyprus that many people often rent a car to get around. This allows them to see the many different sites. However to be honest a lot of tourists also get a driver too.
This is because driving in northern Cyprus isn’t easy. Of course you drive on the left side of the street. And in a lot of cases the drivers don’t use any type of signals so it is always a good idea to stay back from the car in front of you.
Oddly enough, if you come to a red or amber light, don’t stop, this simply means a “real” stoplight is coming up. Still, there is something else that often confuses the tourists to Cyprus and that is the speed signs. These are shown in kilometers and not miles per hour. Once you have driven in Cyprus a time or two is does get easier, however some of the visitors laugh and tell you they will never get used to the concept of driving on the wrong side of the street, which is the left side of the street.
There is a local busing system that runs throughout northern Cyprus due to the high volume of tourists and the many different attractions and sites to be seen. Although it doesn’t stop in one place very long and after a certain time of day the public busing does not run. There are some sites that are pretty to see at night, so some of the tourists will simply walk to enjoy the scenery.
Rural taxis are on the island of Cyprus but they do not drive around for riders. Normally they are at the ready at a stand in which you can “hail” one. What is unique about the taxis are that they do not use meters to go by as far as their trips to certain parts of northern Cyprus. Instead, they have flat rates of fees for their journeys and they do travel these roads often in northern Cyprus. The idea is transportation for the guests, visitors, and tourists that come to the island of Cyprus. Even though the residents that live on the island often use a taxi or a bus simply due to the shortage in spaces to park a vehicle once a destination is reached. The streets are not really crowded but parking doesn’t have any sort of lines or markings and this can make parking somewhat difficult to tourists and visitors alike.
In the summertime officials in Cyprus do not recommend walking anywhere. It is way too hot and even the mountain areas are steamy. If you are going to be out and about using a bus, rental car, or taxi is highly recommended. Tourists want to enjoy the island and not get too hot from walking that they wind up with heat stroke. This is why the residents and officials of northern Cyprus warn against walking fair distances during the hot summer months.
