Over the years, many different forms of agriculture have been grown on the island of Cyprus. Although Cyprus, initially has always been divided into the northern and southern regions both regions have grown produce. However, the northern portion of the island has had greater results. Agriculture has played an important part for the Cypriots.
Crops grown on the island consisted of many citrus fruits and vegetables, grapes for wine making, almond trees, and other products. The land was scarcely irrigated however the Cypriots managed a way of irrigating the land and soon the products were made readily available for consumers.
Growing organic products was introduced in 1988, however it hasn’t taken hold as quickly as neighboring countries. The sizes of farms are not all that big, unless you are referring to the olive trees and almond trees too.
Many of the citrus fruits grown in northern Cyprus are actually exotic fruits. There are some that are not and are very common in many countries. Because of the layout and region of Cyprus soil and land is better in some areas than in others. For example, some almond trees may not grow where grapes for wine making would grow. It all depends on the type of soil. There are many different types of ground and soil found in Cyprus and most of the land is good for growing.
With the development of Cyprus and real estate property becoming so popular some are in fear that homes will ultimately be built where good soil is. However, the agents and those involved with the development of Cyprus are trying to isolate certain areas so this will not affected or become a problem.
The climate in Cyprus is warm and mild in the colder months that usually allows the most rainfall, however with over 300 days of sunshine on Cyprus Island there is no wonder crops grow so well. And why agriculture along with tourism and other economic industry is what makes the island so valuable.
Northern Cyprus would like to see more agriculture in their region although they also respect the green line that divides Cyprus, Europe as of right now. This unfortunately limits the northern portion with agriculture due to soil issues and other obstacles. The growth rate in northern Cyprus is still considered very good among the residents that live there.
In due time, and with effort there are hopes that Cyprus will no longer be divided and then agriculture will have the ability to flourish in many different places. And therefore not be restricted to only special regions of Cyprus.
Agriculture has been one of Cyprus’s economic aids as well as other things combined for a very long time and the agriculture seems to grow as people move to Cyprus too.
At first there were a few skeptics, however the island has warm weather for most of the year and very few cold days. And, the amount of rainfall provides just enough for the crops during certain points of the season.
